SCENOGRAPHY AND COSTUME DESIGN COURSES

Τhis course, a prerequisite for students that wish to specialize in the major of Set and Costume Design, is of introductory character. It provides basic knowledge of set and costume design, with emphasis on techniques: drawing, colour, perspective and model-making. It also addresses the relationship of sets and costumes to dramaturgy and familiarizes the students with stage terminology, related to all functions of theatrical space.

Costume history and sociology (ancient civilizations). Theatre costume semiology. Art and fashion. Contemporary trends in theatre costume design. Costume design drawing exercises and costume constructions with poor materials.

Methology of architectural drawing. Depiction of three-dimensional space to two-dimension drawing by using the rules of projective geometry (floor plan, view, section, e.t.c.).

General introduction to the free hand drawing. Observation exercises, studies and sketches through: still life, statues, busts, figures of everyday life etc. Realization of the attributes of good design: proportions (correct placement, right size, draft, counting etc.). Analysis of shapes, and layers of tones. Shading, volume. Composition, structure, module, perspective. First contact with the various Design materials.

Is a continuation of the course “Free Hand Drawing I” , taking the brunt of the proportions and the clear positioning of the topic (still life, model, busts), but also in constant use and familiarity with all materials such as ink, pencil, marker, charcoal etc. Writing games. General theory of color, tonal and color exercises, experiments on materials and techniques (acrylic, tempera – water colors, etc) using large and small surfaces. Encouragement for continuous design practicing in open and enclosed areas, especially in theatrical spaces (design theatrical figure, clothes, objects etc).

The objective of the lesson is to familiarize the students with the problems in the creation of three dimensional objects, the use of various tools, well as, becoming acquainted with the use and properties of a variety of materials, such as metal, wood, paper or everyday objects. The course prepares students to work individually or as members of a group.

The objective of the course is to introduce the students and familiarize them with the theory of colour, the use of colour in the theatre, as well as, the problems associated in the relation between colour and size.

The three dimensional working model as a tool of scenographic design process. Materials and ways of constructing the model. Practice in the construction of a quick working model and the progression to the construction of a final presentation model.

The course examines the visual phenomena that affect the functioning of visual perception of the theatrical space. More specifically it deals with the elements of visual organisation (form, colour, texture, prospect), concerning the real data of theatrical space and the relations that are developed between the scenographic design and the scenic space. The second part of the course looks at the kinds of theatrical space (open-closed, large-small theaters) and the categories of spectacle derived from them.

Design of set constructions (flats, levels, ramps, staircases, doors, windows etc.). Presentation through three-dimensional drawings (isometrics-axonometrics) and models.

The subject of the course is the art of constructing animated dolls (puppet), and the basic principles for the construction of a theatrical mask. Initially the materials used are wood, clay, fabric and paper, and then collected from the environment of patchy materials for decoration of puppet or mask. Through the course, students will master various techniques and come in contact with the materials, constructing the individual pieces of puppet or mask.

The course is devoted to the art of design and manufacturing (choice of materials, construction techniques and innovations) of theatre objects of all kinds, as well as theatrical mask construction. The materials used are collected from the environment with emphasis on recycling materials. Through this course, students learn various techniques and come into direct contact with materials, constructing individual objects, which are subsequently used in School performances.

Analysis and interpretation of theatrical text. Inspiration sources, research and argumentation. Organising and designing a proposal (portfoglio), history and sociology of costume (Roman, medieval and renaissance period), textiles and costume materials, basics in costume construction.

History and sociology of costume, Art history and fashion, (17th and 18th century, first decades of 19th century), research in costume designing for dance and dance-theatre. The course discusses: study of costume in performance and film; patterns and accessories for the historical costume construction; practical training in designing, lay out of the costume plate, fabric dyeing, painting and aging techniques, costumes’ alteration; costume design presentation for a selected theatre play (costume portfolio).

The axes that usually influence scenographic design are formulated in the course, combining the data that derive, on one hand, from the theatrical space and, on the other hand, from the theatrical text. By the usual expressive means (drawing, photograph, models, etc) students learn the process of concentration and analysis of all data, whose organization will help the scenographic design.

The objective of the course is for the student to learn to paint on a large canvas, his or her familiarization with set painting techniques.

The workshop aims to familiarise students with the scenographic design laws. The basic rules that organize the mechanical workings of the scenes are formulated and the technology that serves all kinds of stage action is presented. Students deal with the construction of stage equipment elements (lofts, lifting devices, etc.), and basic elements of scenographic design. Finally, students, in small groups compose events of one or two minutes long, making use of all possibilities offered by the stage equipment and the scenographic constructions.

The workshop includes activities that have synthetic character, starting with the versions of scenographic design, as the theatre play dictates them. Students are called to apply the basic principles of composition in a fantastic environment. In the neutral space of the stage, students should attribute the atmosphere and the meanings of the place, in relation to the scenic action and practice. At the beginning of the semester, students are given the theatre text and the standards of the application area. The final result is applied in real size according to the sketches and models prepared during the semester.

Basic principles and historical elements of the art of stage lighting. Although it is mainly a theoretical based course, there are such exercises given in class that give to the students the possibility to obtain some practical (hands on) experience and apply in a simple way the basic principles in order to better comprehend them

An Introduction to the psychology of perception in which the nature of the perceptual mechanism is analyzed, certain laws on the basis of which perception operates are presented, its organizational structure is investigated and the basis of visual illusions is examined. The course is based on approaches of the subject from different perspectives such as of various schools of psychology and neurophysiology with a main emphasis on the advancements made by the Gestalt School of psychology. The material is useful both to theoretical and design disciplines. For the understanding of the elements presented in the course exercises are given which the student may work on either from a theoretical or a practical critical standpoint. Additionally, the student is evaluated by a final exam.

An introduction to the History of Architecture, in which examples from main periods and movements are presented and analyzed from antiquity to the present. An emphasis is placed on the main causes for the generation of new historical styles, their basic theoretical tenets and their particular visual and spatial characteristics. The student is evaluated both on the basis of exercises and a final exam. Both modes of evaluation aim at the understanding of basic ideas and essential characteristics which will be useful in the practicing of their art whether this be theoretical or creative.

The goal is for the student to learn to operate two computer programs (Google Sketchup and Archicad) and at the same time to become familiar with some basic principles of visual composition so as to be able to draw a building or a stage setting in these programs.
