Assistant Professor of Costume Design
Chryssa Mantaka studied German Philology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and Shoe Design at the ‘Ars Sutoria’ school of Milan. She also holds a B.A. in Stage and Costume Design from our very own Department, and is also a doctor in stage design (her research focuses on the stage innovations introduced by the early 20th century Russian Avant-Garde) of our Department [2011]. Chryssa has worked professionally as a shoe designer, and as a stage and costume specialist for organizations such as the National Opera of Sophia (Bulgaria), the National Lyric Theatre of Greece (Athens), the Opera / Camerata of Thessaloniki, and others. She has also worked as a costume and stage designer for the State Theatre of Modern Greece, the Experimental Stage Group ‘Techni’, the Opera / Camerata of Thessaloniki and the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. She has taught classes in costume design for a number of private as well as state-run higher education institutes, for the Musical Gymnasium of Thessaloniki before joining our Department as Staff in 2002. Her research centers around the semiology of the theatre costume, the relationship of fashion to art, and the relationship between sociology and costume design.
